Chapter 11

I hung out at Diane's bakery for far too long, sampling every single pastry the woman had to offer. Misty stayed with me for moral support while I conjured a new cell phone. Mine was destroyed in the fire.

After ordering and receiving my phone, I filled Misty in on the latest wedding drama and Aunt Thelma's promise she had everything under control. The truth was, as excited as I was for the wedding, I was getting more worried about it every second that someone was going to kill me before I could say I do, or worse yet, strike me dead at the altar. I didn't like the thought of standing in front of my family and my friends with a target on my back. Misty tried to be reassuring, but I could tell she had her doubts.

Connie had promised she would get working on a potion right away. She told Diane that protection potions took a bit of finesse and asked if I could stop by after eight o’clock. The time was fast approaching.

Vance hadn't explicitly asked Misty to babysit me, but I had a feeling my friends wouldn’t let me out of their sight if they could help it. So much for trying to focus on Brent’s murder to help take my mind off things. Actually, despite everything going on, I still wanted to find out what happened to Brent and Honor. I just had to be careful about it.

“You’re right on time,” Connie said when we walked through the door. Connie was at her cauldron behind the counter, stirring a bubbling potion with a long wooden spoon. We approached the counter and peered over the edge. The brew was deep purple, and pink steam rose from the surface. The potion gave off a sweet yet earthy aroma, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of comfort just smelling it.

“Thanks for doing this,” I said while watching Connie work. She moved fast. A pinch of this. A dollop of that. The potion bubbled and hissed after each ingredient was added. Connie didn’t reply for a moment. She was focused on her work, and I didn’t want to interrupt her. I trailed after Misty, taking in Connie’s Christmas potion kits. She’d bundled together a mini cauldron with her best-selling potions book and a sample pack of ingredients. The bundles were themed. Green was for luck, red was love, and gold was for prosperity. It was a smart idea. I’d bought a cauldron from Connie a little over a year ago, but it sat unused in Aunt Thelma’s kitchen. I should’ve started with something smaller like this.

“It’s done!” Connie called. I left the mini cauldrons and returned to the counter.

“I think you’ll like it. It’s a protection potion, as promised. I infused it with amethyst for protection, lavender for calming, and a touch of peppermint for a refreshing boost." Connie gave it a final stir.

"How does it work?" Misty asked, rejoining us.

"Think of it like armor. The potion creates a protective barrier around you.
